Michelle Williams, of Destiny's
Child appeared on "The Talk", where she revealed she has suffered
from depression and even contemplated suicide during the height of her career.
“I’m in one of the top-selling
female groups of all time, suffering with depression,”
When I disclosed it to our
manager [Mathew Knowles] at the time, bless his heart, he was like, ‘You all
just signed a multi-million dollar deal. You’re about to go on tour. What do
you have to be depressed about?’”
“So I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m
just tired,’” she continued, adding, however, that her dark thoughts only
deepened “to the point where I was suicidal … and wanted out” [from the group].
It wasn’t until she was in her
30s that she realized she was suffering from depression.
Lord knows we all make fun of
Michelle, but this time I'm cheering her on. Her story shows any person can be
affected by depression no matter who you are or what you have. The stigma
surrounding mental health is definitely part of the problem. We can promote
cars- clothes- and hoes, but as soon as you bring up mental health nobody wants
to speak. I commend the people with a platform for sharing their truth and
addressing the lack of awareness towards the issue in hopes to help another.
